progress

Progress I would define progress as any sort of improvement or any sign of moving forward. " The Progressive Era was a period of widespread social activism and political reform across the United States that spanned from the 1890s to the 1920s." ( wikipedia ). This era in time is referred to as the progressive era because during this time people were targeting their bosses for form a direct democracy.  They, " sought to address the economic, political, and cultural questions that had arisen in the context of the rapid changes brought with the Industrial Revolution and the growth of modern capitalism in America." ( heritage ). Cate gorizing their goals in order of importance: fostering efficiency  creating economic reform protecting social welfare promoting moral improvement

the future

Predicting the Future One prediction that was made in 1952 says " There will not be another world war during this century. The next 50 years will witness an amazing increase in wealth and prosperity, with a continuous rise in the world standard of living." ( Smithsonian ). This prediction was made after the second world war so that part of the prediction is true. The next point can be argued because there is still a lot of poverty in the  world but there are also people with unfathomable amounts of money, some trying to help those in poverty and some not. 100 years ago John Watkins made some predictions for where the world would be, others very wrong. Some of his predictions that have definitely happened are, "d igital colour photography, m obile phones, p re-prepared meals, t elevision, and t anks" ( BBC ).   On the other hand some of his other predictions were very far off such as, " No more C, X or Q, n o more cars in large cities, e veryb...

women and voting

Women and Voting The 19th amendment of the US constitution, passed June 4th 1919 and ratified August 18th 1920, gave women the right to vote for the first time in American history. The House of Representatives passed this amendment on May 21, 1919 with the Senate following behind them two weeks later. On August 18, 1920, Tennessee was the 36th state to approve this amendment, giving it the three-fourths of the states in favor of it. The last step in America being changed forever was taken on August 26, 1920 when Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby approved the ratification.  While women fought for this right, they were sometimes abused or even put in jail by those against this act becoming legal. To get this right women spent years protesting by marching and acting "uncivil" to get what they wanted. Starting in the 1800s, women petitioned in order to receive their right to vote, which wasn't accomplished until dec...

political cartoons on imperialism

Image
Imperialism in Political Cartoons I think this political cartoon is trying to say that the philippinos don't want to be part of America but the US is still trying to chase them down and have them colonize with us. Also with Europe in the background I think the cartoonist is trying to add that if they don't join America then the europeans are going to go in and try to have the Philippines join Europe. The reason I think this is because Uncle Sam is running after a person with the word "filipino" written on them and a group of people are in the background standing on land labeled Europe.  link to picture I think this political cartoon is trying to say that all of these different places are attempting to colonize with Africa and are all pulling the country in different directions but it's not moving anywhere. I think this because the picture has 8 men, all labeled with different places, and it has marks by each of their hands trying to show movement ...

Watergate scandal

Watergate Scandal    In 1972, President Richard Nixon was running for reelection and the country was divided and involved in the Vietnam War. According to history.com , during the May of 1972, " members of Nixon’s Committee to Re-Elect the President (known derisively as CREEP), broke into the Democratic National Committee’s Watergate headquarters, stole copies of top-secret documents and bugged the office’s phones."  It was later discovered that these microphones hadn't been set up correctly and didn't work, so on June 17, 1972, these men went back into the building to put together the new microphone. While doing this a guard had noticed the locks on the doors had been taped over, called the police, and caught them. Once all this happened the question was raised of are these men working with Nixon on his campaign because, " detectives found copies of the reelection committee’s  White House  phone number among the burglars’ belongings."( ...
