Predicting the Future
- One prediction that was made in 1952 says "There will not be another world war during this century. The next 50 years will witness an amazing increase in wealth and prosperity, with a continuous rise in the world standard of living." (Smithsonian). This prediction was made after the second world war so that part of the prediction is true. The next point can be argued because there is still a lot of poverty in the world but there are also people with unfathomable amounts of money, some trying to help those in poverty and some not. 100 years ago John Watkins made some predictions for where the world would be, others very wrong. Some of his predictions that have definitely happened are, "digital colour photography, mobile phones, pre-prepared meals, television, and tanks" (BBC). On the other hand some of his other predictions were very far off such as, "No more C, X or Q, no more cars in large cities, everybody will walk 10 miles a day, and no mosquitoes or flies" (BBC). While this man is predicting this, the germans predictions for the future are amazingly accurate. They said, "flying machines, movable houses, airships, undersea ship, theater, and a moving sidewalk" (mental floss).
- Some of John Watkins predictions could be seen as dreams for the future. His predictions were, "the rising height of Americans and everybody will walk 10 miles a day" (BBC). I think these are hopes for the future rather than predictions because they focus more on the population itself, as in their characteristics, rather than where the world will be.
- Some predictions that have come true are, "digital colour photography, mobile phones, pre-prepared meals, television, tanks" from BBC; "flying machines, movable houses, airships, undersea ship, theater, and a moving sidewalk" from mental floss; "electric scrubbing, an aerial battle, a week-trained orchestra, battle cars" from "The Public Domain Review". Some predictions that are very far from the the world today are, "ship railway, roofed city, good weather machine" from mental floss; "divers on horseback and a whale bus" from "The Public Domain Review"; "every body will walk ten miles and there will be no wild animals" from "Open Culture"
- Some identified trends that are shown in these predictions are that people are expecting the world to be more technology driven, which has happened. Most of these predictions are based around technology and the advancement of it.
- I think there will be more people famous for pointless things in the future, technology will be in more places than it should, and that fashion will be more colorful and "fun" than ever before.
